Austin Portrait Design Blog bio picture

Welcome to our Blog!

Austin Portrait Design is owned and operated by Allen and Diane Austin in the historic village of Appomattox, Virginia. We started this photo-blog in late 2009 as a place to showcase some of our favorite images and let you know what's going on at the studio. Most of these images come from client sessions, but many were made for our own personal enjoyment.

Allen has enjoyed creating art through photography for over 30 years. In 1994 we built our studio and went from making photography a weekend business to a full-time career.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments to share.

While creating an angel portrait this week for Caroline, we had the idea to add her older sister Katie. This was the first time we had ever tried this and we were delighted with the results. I am sure we will be doing this again. If you or someone you know would make a good...

As classic as it gets

For over 30 years we  have been creating classic and timeless portraits of children in central Virginia. This type of expression is my favorite. A big smile is fun for candids but a soft smile is one that will pass the test of time. Don’t let time pass without a portrait of your loved ones....

Portrait of Santa

It’s not every day you get a call from Santa and he needs a portrait, but that’s exactly what happened today at the studio. I have to admit the little boy inside me came out and I could hardly wait for his arrival. Diane was also very excited even though she didn’t show it as...

More family portraits

Images speak, and a family portrait says, “I love you,” in a unique way. It’s a visible, tangible reminder that this group of individuals belongs to one another and that they’re glad. So glad, in fact, that they want to remember this time forever.  When children see their individual and family portraits on display, it...

The next Tiger?

Camden was totally up for taking his 4-year-old portrait on the golf course and so were we. We had a blast capturing him in action on the course at Falling River Country Club, where his dad has taught him to love the game.  (Can you tell anything else he loves? Notice the hat… orange and...
